  1. People:The key strength of Box Hill is PEOPLE. People create ACTIVITY and demand for GROWTH. Approximately 21 Million people access the Box Hill Mall each year.Box Hill is a destination for many people, to live, work, shop, do business and access services.The growing diversity in Box Hill allows people to “think inside the box” for all of their needs and reduce the need to travel elsewhere. In recent times, Box Hill has become a renowned destination for Asian specialty goods and services and is often referred to as the epicenter for the Asian community in Melbourne.
  2. Location: Box Hill is less than 15 kilometres from Melbourne CBD and the approximate half-way point between the city and urban fringe to the east around the Dandenong Ranges directly East of Melbourne. Box Hill is near the geographic centre of metropolitan Melbourne and is within close proximity of many established eastern and south eastern suburbs and the link between other supporting centres such as Doncaster, Glen Waverley and Ringwood.
  3. Transport & Accessibility: Box Hill is one of the busiest transport hubs in Melbourne, with two (2) train lines, two (2) tram routes and 21 bus routes. In addition to public transport, Box Hill is easily accessible by car, walking and cycling. There are approximately 8,700 car parking spaces (public and private) within Box Hill Central Activities Area.
  4. Employment: Box Hill CAA is home to approximately 16,000 jobs. Numerous employment services are also located within Box Hill including Centrelink, Workbridge, RecruitNet, Randstad and EACH Employment Services.
  5. Education and Training: Box Hill Institute of TAFE has more than 40,000 students and employs around 1800 staff over three campuses and continues to grow. Deakin University’s largest campus in Burwood has approximately 19,000 on-campus students and is easily accessible from Box Hill by public transport.
  6. Health: Box Hill Hospital is a major regional public hospital admitting more than 48,000 patients each year and employs over 4,400 staff. The hospital is undergoing a major redevelopment and significant expansion to services costing $457 Million. The Epworth Eastern private hospital (also recently redeveloped), various specialised medical suites and allied health services in the area make Box Hill pivotal to healthcare in the eastern metropolitan region of Melbourne.
  7. Business: Approximately 146,000 square metres of office space, with the public sector being largest user. Box Hill is a popular destination for business, banking and finance (including Commonwealth Bank, ANZ, Westpac, Bendigo Bank, HSBC and recently the Bank of China).
  8. Government Services: As well as being a major employer in Box Hill, state and federal  government departments, such as the Department of Health, Justice, Planning and Community Development, Sustainability and Environment and the Australian Taxation Office, make Box Hill a popular destination and provide relevant services to the community in the eastern region of Melbourne.
  9. Community Services: Box Hill is a regional destination for specialised care, support and services. Over 100 community service providers, including SCOPE, Alkira, Yoorala, Anglicare, Salvation Army, Whitehorse Community Health and Eastern Access Community Health, provide a wide range of support services such as counselling, dental care, drug and alcohol services, disability services, aged care, youth support, mental health, maternal and child health and migrant support services.
  10. Housing: Box Hill is growing rapidly and is home to more than 8,600 residents (Box Hill Statistical Subdivision) and around 4,000 residents in the Central Activities Area (CAA) alone. There is a high level of cultural diversity and large proportion of Box Hill’s residents born overseas. There are more than 3,300 dwellings in Box Hill (1,250 dwellings within the CAA) ranging from traditional detached houses in leafy residential streets, to modest apartments and purpose-built student apartments. Seventy percent of households are sole or two-person households.

Retail: Despite being located between Doncaster (approximately double the retail size of Box Hill) and Chadstone (approximately three times larger than Box Hill), Box Hill has a thriving retail centre. This busy and distinct retail centre consists of more than 58,000 square metres of retail and more than 300 shops. The retail area includes two major shopping centres, supplemented by an open-air pedestrian shopping mall and traditional shopping strip. There is a diverse retail offer, including a fresh food market, major supermarkets, discount department stores, restaurants, cafes, personal services and Asian specialty shops.

Events & Culture: Box Hill hosts a number of popular events and festivals throughout the year, held in the Box Hill Town Hall, Box Hill Community Arts Centre, Box Hill Gardens and in the Box Hill Mall. Box Hill is a renowned for its annual celebration of the Moon Festival and extremely popular Chinese New Year festivities, which attracts around 70,000 people to the centre of Box Hill.
  13. Leisure and Recreation: Box Hill is well serviced by parks and well patronised leisure facilities, including the Box Hill Gardens, Kingsley Gardens, Surrey Park and Aqualink Box Hill.
